Auburn improved to 8-3 on Saturday with a 52-0 win over Samford. AU entered the game ranked No. 16 in the College Football Playoff selection committee rankings. Samford head coach Chris Hatcher sees the Tigers as a top-5 team if they played outside the SEC West.

Hatcher’s high praise for Gus Malzahn’s squad came in the opening statement of his postgame press conference, per AL.com’s Tom Green:

…but at the end of the day they’re a really good team. I think if they are in any other division they’re probably in the top five. That defensive front they have is phenomenal. They’ve got a great quarterback and some great skill players to go along with him.

Florida and Georgia fans would likely be quick to point out that two of Auburn’s three losses came outside its division. Still, it’s fair to wonder where Auburn might be ranked if it faced a schedule that did not feature as many conference contests against ranked teams.
