Opening Day is finally here for baseball fans. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Opening Day is in late July and the regular season is shortened to just 60 games – but Major League Baseball is back.
SEC fans will see plenty of familiar faces while watching America’s pastime over the next few months. The conference has 79 former players of current programs on Opening Day rosters, 31 more than any other conference. The conference is including former Missouri and Texas A&M players who played for the Tigers and Aggies before they were members of the SEC.
Here’s the tally of SEC alumni, per the SEC Network on Twitter:
- LSU – 9
- Vanderbilt – 9
- Mississippi State – 8
- Arkansas – 7
- South Carolina – 7
- Texas A&M – 6
- Alabama – 5
- Florida – 5
- Ole Miss – 5
- Georgia – 4
- Kentucky – 4
- Missouri – 4
- Auburn – 3
- Tennessee – 3
Included in those 79 players are the 5 Opening Day starting pitchers covered earlier this week.
This year’s “Opening Day” was spread out over two days. Two games were played last night (Washington Nationals at New York Yankees, San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers). The rest of the league opened play Friday.
