SEC Network analyst Chris Doering is all in on John Mateer.
The former Washington State transfer moved to Oklahoma this offseason where he will try to revitalize a Sooners’ offense that ranked near the bottom of all FBS teams in 2024. Mateer was one of the most efficient passers in the country last season and will be joined in Norman by his offensive coordinator, Ben Arbuckle.
Doering believes Mateer will win the 2025 Heisman Trophy.
“I think this guy is going to be the SEC Player of the Year and I also think he’s going to win the Heisman Trophy,” Doering said.
Mateer has earned some hype coming into the season given his performance at Wazzu, but he’s still pretty far down the Heisman Trophy odds board. Mateer is +2500 to win the Heisman this season, per the latest odds from BetMGM and a few of the other top betting apps.
If Mateer does win the Heisman, he’d join a list of 7 such winners in Oklahoma football history. Kyler Murray, Baker Mayfield, Sam Bradford, Jason White, Billy Sims, Steve Owens and Billy Vessels are the Oklahoma players who have accomplished that feat previously. The most recent was Murray in 2018.
Oklahoma will kick off the 2025 season against Illinois State on Aug. 30.
