Alabama, Tennessee, Auburn, Ole Miss and Mississippi State are among the schools chasing a four-star junior college defensive end.
Jonathan Kongbo of Arizona Western is one of the top junior college defensive ends in the nation. He is a 6-foot-6, 264-pound end who runs a 4.69-second 40-yard dash. He currently has 15 offers from FBS schools.
“It’s been pretty amazing,” Kongbo told Dawgman.com. “It’s just been within the past two or three weeks that I have gotten a lot of schools coming after me and offer me.”
This year, Kongbo has 49 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks for Arizona Western.
Kongbo hasn’t taken the traditional route to becoming a four-star prospect. He was born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and moved to Canada when he was five. He grew up in Surrey, B.C. (a suburb of Vancouver), and didn’t play football until his senior year of high school. He got a scholarship to Wyoming, but transferred to Arizona Western after redshirting his first year.
Now he’s got a number of prominent programs chasing him.
Kongbo has already visited one SEC school, and will travel to another one next weekend.
“I’ve already visited Mississippi (on Oct. 24) and I’m visiting Auburn (on Nov. 21),” Kongbo said. “Other than that, I don’t have any other visits set up, although I am planning to visit Washington soon and I’ll take unofficial visits to see Arizona State and Arizona just because they are so close.”
Nebraska, Louisville, Oregon State and Rutgers have also offered Kongbo a scholarship.
Kongbo will have three years of eligibility remaining after this season.
