Here are two games involving SEC teams to keep an eye on today that could be closer than the experts think:
RELATED: Full SEC Week 2 schedule
No. 24 MISSOURI at TOLEDO (upset chance 50 percent), Noon ET, ESPN — Few from the ‘Zou consider the Rockets a viable opponent, but Gary Pinkel’s former program has the talent — and the home field advantage — to knock off the defending East champs. The spread’s only 3.5 points, so that should tell you something. There’s also a potential star at quarterback for Toledo in former Alabama passer Phillip Ely. Ely threw for 337 yards and four touchdowns in last week’s 54-20 win over New Hampshire. Mizzou’s secondary must play well and Maty Mauk too.
EAST CAROLINA at No. 21 SOUTH CAROLINA (upset chance 35 percent), 7 p.m. ET, ESPNU — This one’s a pivotal matchup for the Gamecocks who will go into a deep, season-long slumber with a loss. Rebounding from last week’s home stunner in the opener will be easier said than done against a program that won 10 games last fall. Front four pressure and solid tackling are South Carolina’s biggest keys to stopping the Pirates’ pass-heavy scheme.
