SEC Weekend Recap: Transfers and coaching rumors and moves around the conference
How did you spend the first post-college football weekend of 2015? If you weren’t huddled inside hoping that Ohio State would somehow be squaring off against TCU, you might have missed some of the news from around the conference.
Here’s a rundown of the biggest stories you might have missed from Saturday and Sunday.
- Lane Kiffin to the NFL? After a successful first season at Alabama, we speculated that another strong year in 2015 would have Kiffin’s name in consideration as a head coach somewhere in college football next year. He may be moving onto his next stop earlier than we anticipated. A report from ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter said Kiffin has drawn interest from the San Francisco 49ers as they look for a new offensive coordinator. It’s late in the game for Alabama in terms of filling the vacancy, and the Crimson Tide have already lost a slew of assistants, but Nick Saban should have no issue filling the spot should it come open.
- K.J. Hill decommits from Arkansas. The Razorbacks appear to have lost a battle on the home front, with their home state’s No. 1 player re-opening his recruitment over the weekend. Arkansas is still ranked among the top 25 recruiting classes in the nation, but the run-dependent Razorbacks could have definitely used the boost the four-star prospect would have provided at receiver.
- New Atlanta football mecca. With the Atlanta Falcons debuting the visuals for their new stadium, slated to replace the Georgia Dome in 2017, we could have our first look at the future site of the SEC Championship Game. The state-of-the-art arena looks like it will put even the most ostentatious stadiums in the world to shame.
- Altee Tenpenny transferring? Alabama is going to have a crowded backfield situation regardless in 2015, but one competitor for playing time may be on his way out. Tenpenny tweeted on Sunday that he’s going to “start a new chapter,” making it sound as if his time in Tuscaloosa is at an end. Tenpenny rushed for 218 yards in his two years with the Crimson Tide.
- Stephen Rivers will transfer again. After one year at Vanderbilt, it appears Rivers is on the move again. After transferring from LSU last year, Rivers was one of four quarterbacks to play for the Commodores in 2014. He finished the season down the depth chart and will look to play elsewhere for his final year of eligibility.
- Texas A&M hires a wide receivers coach. Kevin Sumlin filled a final vacancy on his staff, bringing aboard Virgina Tech wide receivers coach Aaron Moorehead for the same job over the weekend. The 34-year-old Moorehead won a Super Bowl playing with the Indianapolis Colts in 2007 and has been in the coaching ranks since 2009. Moorehead replaces David Beaty, who left after the regular season to become head coach at Kansas.
