Shane Beamer and Sam Pittman have crossed paths across college football for years, and even were on the same Georgia staff for a while. The coaches will meet this week in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and likely share some memories of their time together, and as rival recruiters.
Beamer at his Tuesday press conference recalled how Pittman once beat him out for blue chip recruit Robert Quinn out of the Charleston, South Carolina area.
“I remember thinking, ‘How in the heck did the offensive line coach at North Carolina just get Robert Quinn to come to Chapel Hill,’ and he did” Beamer said.
Beamer said Pittman helped him in his career at Georgia because Beamer had never coached tight ends before.
“The offensive line coach and the tight ends coach work very closely together, and he was very patient and taught me a lot,” Beamer said. “… We lived in the same neighborhood in Athens, and he’s a good friend, and someone I always pull for, so happy for his success, and he has a really good team, who plays really hard and has taken on his personality and it’ll be a big challenge for us Saturday.”
