Shane Steichen is a strong believer in Anthony Richardson’s rookie season in the NFL. The first-year Indianapolis Colts head coach is more than confident of Richardson and his play great as a starter.

On Wednesday, Steichen broke down what makes Richardson a special player and the decision to make him a starter on Tuesday:

“I think starting him in here and getting him here right after the draft, just his work habits and what he was doing and the athlete ability and the playmaking ability he brings and going into training camp, just still continuing to see that growth and getting him into that preseason game against a lot of the Buffalo starters,” said Steichen. “They got a really good defense and thought he had really good poise. We had the early interception to see him bounce back and make the throws that he did and the plays he made, just really excited about his future.”

Off the field, Steichen referred to Richardson’s high character, charisma and being a great teammate as impressive traits to go with his playmaking ability leading the offense:

“He’s a very high-character guy. Just the way he treats people. He’s a charismatic guy, he cares about people. Great teammate,” Steichen explained. “Wants to do everything right and just going through the draft process with him and the vetting process with him and guys that I know and trust that have coached him at Florida had nothing but great things to say about him. You see the upside on film, it just jumps off the tape. You watch the tape in the draft and it’s like ‘Holy smokes, there are not many guys that can do the things he can do.'”

The Colts selected the former Florida Gator with the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
