South Carolina quarterback Perry Orth is one of 55 players who have been nominated for the Burlsworth Trophy.

The Burlsworth Trophy honors the nation’s best walk-on student-athlete.

Orth won the Gamecocks’ starting quarterback job earlier this season. He has thrown for 1,180 yards and seven touchdowns in 2015. He has also run for two scores.

Orth, a native of Ponte Vedra, Fla., joined the South Carolina football program as a walk-on in the spring of 2013. Since arriving in Columbia, he has moved up from sixth on the depth chart to first string. He also earned a scholarship this year.

The Burlsworth Trophy is named in honor of former University of Arkansas offensive lineman Brandon Burlsworth, who went from a walk-on to an All-American. Burlsworth was a third round pick of the Indianapolis Colts in 1999, but died in a car accident 11 days after the draft.

The winner of the award will be announced on Dec. 7.
