The Ol’ Ball Coach could return to South Carolina in the near future.
But not as the head football coach.
According to The State, Steve Spurrier is reportedly considering taking an ambassador position with the University of South Carolina. If he accepts that role, Spurrier would be a special assistant to school president Harris Pastides and athletic director Ray Tanner.
The ambassador position would begin once Spurrier’s official employment at South Carolina ends on Dec. 31. The former coach reportedly would receive a $100,000 annual salary.
Spurrier resigned as South Carolina’s football coach on Oct. 12. He was in the middle of his 11th season with the Gamecocks. He is the school’s winningest coach, having gone 89-46.
According to USA Today, South Carolina still owed Spurrier between $900,000 and $1.1 million when the coach resigned. Pastides said that continuing to pay Spurrier even after he resigned was the most financially sensible option the school had.
“There were alternate payment possibilities that could have cost the university more,” Pastides said. “Without getting into detail, I think most people are thinking the alternative is zero. But there are alternate possibilities that could have been arrived at through negotiation with the coach that possibly could have been more.”
South Carolina is currently searching for its next head coach. The Gamecocks are 1-3 under interim head coach Shawn Elliott.
