Juwan Mitchell knows what it’s like to leave the Big 12 for the SEC. After spending his sophomore and junior seasons at Texas in 2019 and 2020, Mitchell transferred to Tennessee this offseason. The new Volunteer and former Longhorn was recently asked what he thought of his former school making the move to his current conference.
“I’m proud of them,” Mitchell told reporters, per GoVols247. “They should (join the SEC). They want to come over here just like I do. There’s a lot of talent at Texas and one of the reasons, I’m showing it as well, that we can ball as well, so them coming over, it’ll definitely help them a lot, to get drafted where they need to and play on a national level.”
Mitchell said the SEC played a factor in his decision to take his talents to Rocky Top.
“I really picked Tennessee because of the coaching staff, the conference,” he told reporters, per GoVols247. “A lot went into it, but the transition’s been smooth. I love the versatility of how offenses are ran (in the SEC), I’ve been watching some film. I pretty much look at the SEC as the Big 12 and Big Ten combined.”
In two seasons at Texas, Mitchell played in 18 games, recording 99 tackles, including 8 for loss, along with 5 passes defended and a fumble recovery. He had a team-high 62 tackles last season.
Mitchell entered the transfer portal in March and announced his commitment to Tennessee in May.
