The Tennessee Volunteers have one of the SEC’s best quarterbacks in Hendon Hooker, who had a solid performance in the 59-10 blowout win over the Ball State Cardinals in Week 1 action.

But he wasn’t the only quarterback who saw the field, with Joe Milton III getting the chance to see some snaps in relief of Hooker after the team had already built up a staunch lead. Milton completed 8-of-9 passes for 113 yards and one touchdown on an interception-free day.

He also had one carry for 21 yards with a big run on the ground.

“He played extremely well,” Tennessee quarterbacks coach Joey Halzle said of Milton. “Hate to use the word flawless, but he was extremely high level out there.”

He added that Milton is something very few teams have in backup in the era of the transfer portal, something that is very true as several talented quarterbacks with at least potential starting ability frequently jump ship for a chance at taking the helm elsewhere.

It will be interesting to see what Milton continues to show whenever he gets his opportunities during this season as Tennessee faces No. 17-ranked Pittsburgh on Saturday.
