Quarterback play is a touchy subject at Tennessee right now, what with starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava unceremoniously leaving the program after an NIL dispute.

On Saturday, head coach Josh Heupel confirmed the departure, explaining that no single player is “bigger than the program.” He also clarified that there are 2 players available in the QB room for now, that group consisting of Jake Merklinger and George MacIntyre. And, fortunately, fans were treated to a couple of pretty moments in the passing game.

During the spring game, MacIntyre had one early touchdown that was a beautiful pass to the end zone. The ball was placed safely between the coverage, fitting it into a nice window before the safety help arrived.

Take a look:

MacIntyre later added another touchdown, though this throw was much more pedestrian than the other:

Of course, a few throws in a spring game do not mean that MacIntyre or any other player is ready to start an SEC game for Heupel’s squad. However, it had to at least be a bright spot for Vol fans after the past few days.

Coming out of high school, MacIntyre was a 4-star prospect and the No. 13 QB nationally in the 2025 recruiting class per the 247 Sports Composite. It’s nice to see him hit the ground running, but fans can also expect to see new faces in the QB room before the fall rolls around.

Even if MacIntyre were to instill a lot of confidence, the pending departure of Iamaleava leaves Tennessee shorthanded with 2 scholarship quarterbacks on the roster. The Vols will certainly add to that group before the start of fall camp with the spring window set to open next week.
