The Texas A&M Aggies finished the 2025 season with top-20 rankings in many defensive categories. That unit’s talents were on full display during the Aggies’ low-scoring College Football Playoff loss. Texas A&M hopes to maintain its defensive prowess in 2026, and has reportedly added another assistant to its staff to help make that happen.

According to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz, the Aggies are expected to hire Stanford’s Paul Williams as a nickels coach. Williams, who has been with the Cardinal since 2023, has also been on staff at Miami, Illinois, Houston and Wake Forest in the past 15 years.

According to his Stanford bio, Williams has coached “11 players on active NFL rosters and has produced 14 NFL draft picks” over the past decade and a half.

While Williams will likely have influence — to a degree — on all of the Aggies’ defensive backs, his specialization in the nickel position will have him working closely with rising junior cornerback Jordan Shaw. The former Indiana and Washington player had 18 tackles (2.5 tackles for loss) in 2025. With Williams’ impressive track record of development, Shaw could play his way onto NFL Draft boards in short order.

Texas A&M opens the 2026 campaign versus Missouri State on Sept. 5.
