Texas associate head coach Blake Gideon is leaving Austin to join Georgia Tech as Brent Key’s new defensive coordinator, according to a report from CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz.

Gideon also coached safeties for the Longhorns. A Texas alum, Gideon has been on the staff with Steve Sarkisian for each of the last 4 seasons. This past season, Gideon coached a group that included All-SEC selection Andrew Mukuba.

Texas ended the 2024 campaign tied for the national lead with just 5.7 passing yards allowed per play. UT was also tied with BYU for the most interceptions in the FBS (22) and ranked second in passer rating allowed (104.6).

Mukuba, a transfer from Clemson prior to the season, led the defense with 5 interceptions. Safety Michael Taaffe, a former walk-on at the school, had 2 picks. Taaffe and Mukuba finished second and third on the team in total tackles, combining for 147.

Gideon began his coaching career as a defensive quality control assistant at Florida in 2014. He worked as a grad assistant at Auburn in 2015 and then got his first full-time job as a defensive backs coach at Western Carolina in 2016. After 2 seasons, he jumped to Georgia State in 2018 to coach corners. Gideon also has stops at Houston (2019) and Ole Miss (2020), where he coached safeties and coordinated the special teams.

At Georgia Tech, Gideon will replace Tyler Santucci, who left earlier this week to become the Baltimore Ravens’ linebackers coach.

According to Horns247, Gideon earned $600,000 at Texas last year. The outlet also reported that a provision in his contract waives a buyout fee owed to the school if he accepts a position at another school as a play-calling coordinator.
