That’s not how this works: Vanderbilt pins itself at its own 1-yard line with worst play of the day

The Vanderbilt Commodores are 0-5 and haven’t shown many signs of life this season. Coach Derek Mason is on the hot seat and things are looking bleak.
However, you’d at least expect an SEC team to understand the rules of football. That appears to be too much to ask for the Commodores, though.
As you can see below, on the Commodores’ first kickoff return of the day, the return man caught the ball at the 1-yard line, then bizarrely signaled for a fair catch. The officials ruled it as the runner was down at the 1-yard line:

That’s a horrible play that just can’t happen at the FBS level. Heck, that sort of thing doesn’t happen anywhere very often.
The Commodores did manage to get a first down on that drive, but ended up punting eventually, anyway.
Early in the second quarter, the Commodores trail the Wildcats 14-7.
