Tim Brando has said a month into the season, the contenders in college football are beginning to separate themselves from the pretenders.

The Fox Sports play-by-play voice suggested that many of those contenders call the SEC home. Notre Dame, even after a narrow loss to Georgia, was “clearly a pretender” next to Michigan in Brando’s eyes as the Wolverines are the most disappointing team in country after they had their “doors blown off” in Madison, Wisconsin.

“The likelihood now of Georgia, LSU, Auburn, who by the way, got the job done on the road against a highly-overrated Texas A&M team at Kyle Field in College Station. Those teams, three of them in the SEC West, and one of them, Georgia, in the SEC East, are direct threats to the College Football Playoff,” Brando said. “You’re going to hear crowing down south, who will not only be suggesting two teams make the College Football Playoff, but three teams could make the Playoff. A likely scenario might even be … LSU win every game, but lose to Alabama, and then keep winning. Why wouldn’t LSU, given the fact that they beat a Texas team that could roll through the Big 12, they could be staking a claim to being one of the top four teams in the country and not even play in the SEC title game.”

Brando suggested that Georgia’s Jake Fromm and LSU’s Joe Burrow should be in the Heisman Trophy conversation with Oklahoma’s Jalen Hurts and Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa. Wisconsin RB Jonathan Taylor is the top non-quarterback in the Heisman race, Brando said.

“Georgia is without a doubt in the elite class with Clemson and Alabama,” he said. “They proved that on Saturday night between the hedges with their thorough demolition of Notre Dame. (Jake) Fromm is outstanding. He’s probably the most overlooked of the great quarterbacks in college football.”
