Tim Tebow and Brandon Spikes are Gator greats for their Florida football careers, highlighted by national championships in 2006 and ’08. Another SEC coach had hoped to sign the superstar duo, along with another UF standout.
Spikes, who is back at Florida as a student assistant on Billy Napier’s staff, caught up with Tebow on Saturday in Jacksonville. The pair joined “Marty & McGee” ahead of “SEC Nation.”
Marty Smith was asking the pair about their leadership when Tebow decided to point out they could have played for another SEC team.
“Honestly, me and Tebow, when we met at 17 years old…” Spikes started.
“On the sidelines at Alabama,” Tebow jumped in.
“Funny story,” Spikes said,” Coach (Mike) Shula was the coach at the time. Percy Harvin, Tebow and me, we were there on our official (visit). He looked at us like, ‘If I can get you 3, I can win a lot of ball games.’ Urban (Meyer) got us. And we won a lot of ball games.”
Shula was Alabama’s head coach from 2003-to-2006. Many SEC fans have pondered what Nick Saban’s career might have looked like had Tebow signed with Alabama instead of Florida. If Shula had landed Tebow plus Spikes and Harvin, his Alabama tenure likely goes much differently.
