Tommy Rees is having a tough start to the season for Notre Dame, and a brief clip of the offensive coordinator in the press box on the phone summarized how his frustrations are playing out during the game.

He appeared to say, “Do your (expletive) job. The whole (expletive) team is counting on you. Now (expletive) step it up.”

The Fighting Irish have already tumbled from No. 5 all the way out of the AP Top 25 after they lost at No. 2 Ohio State and then suffered last week’s headline-grabbing home loss to Marshall. One more loss would give them their first 0-3 start in 15 years.

Rees has dealt with a shoulder injury to Tyler Buchner at quarterback, and Notre Dame looked to
Drew Pyne to jump-start its sputtering offense when unbeaten California visited on Saturday.

The numbers are ugly. Notre Dame came into Saturday ranked 117th out of the 131 FBS teams in scoring offense (15.5 points) and total yards (302.0 per game). The rushing offense averages 103.0 yards, No. 110.

The Fighting Irish appeared to get things on track in the fourth quarter with a pair of field goals and a touchdown to take a 24-17 lead with 9:16 remaining.
