In today’s football, kickers seem to have stronger and stronger legs. One example that comes to mind is the Dallas Cowboys’ Brandon Aubrey.
Florida kicker Trey Smack may not be quite at Aubrey’s level yet — few people are — but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a big leg himself. He’s been showcasing it throughout much of his college career.
On Saturday, Smack made a little history while putting the Gators ahead of Georgia early in the 4th quarter. His 54-yard try sailed through the uprights as Florida pulled ahead 20-17.
The historic part? Smack now has kicked 9 field goals from 50 yards or more in his career, a program record.
Here’s the video:
A Severna Park, Md. native, Smack eventually took on kickoff duty as a true freshman in 2022. He became the starting placekicker in 2023 and made all 29 of his extra points while going 17-of-21 on field goals, including a high of 54 yards. In 2024, he was a perfect 44-of-44 in point-after attempts and 18-of-21 on field goal tries, setting a new career long of 55 yards.
Heading into Saturday, Smack was 17-of-17 on PATs and 12-of-15 on field goal attempts for the season. On Aug. 30, he drilled a 56-yarder against Long Island, the longest of his career thus far.
Smack’s 54-yarder against the Bulldogs was his second made field goal of the day. His 22-yarder in the first quarter gave Florida a 10-7 lead.
