The Heisman Trophy is going down to the wire.
The top three players in the conversation right now are Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa, Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray and Ohio State QB Dwayne Haskins. All three should and will likely be in New York for the trophy presentation.
After being mentioned as the leader all season, Tagovailoa didn’t play well against Georgia. He finished just 10-of-25 for 164 yards, one TD and two INTs. Tagovailoa was also injured, too, and backup QB Jalen Hurts bailed out the Tide and led the amazing comeback to propel Alabama to victory.
Paul Finebaum joined SportsCenter Sunday morning to discuss his take on the Heisman Trophy after Championship Saturday.
“I have vacillated all night, and I have until tomorrow,” Finebaum said on SportsCenter. “But today, I’d vote for Tua. I think his body of work is spectacular. I haven’t seen a quarterback look this good all year. I think Kyler Murray made a very good closing argument, but I hate to penalize Tua for getting hurt, especially by his own player. He did not play well though. It was a very ineffective game, but I am leaning toward voting for Tua.”
Murray and OU beat Texas, and the Sooners’ quarterback threw for 379 yards and three TDs.
After Saturday, Murray leads the nation with a passer rating of 205.72, while Tagovailoa is second with 202.30. Murray has thrown for 40 TDs and seven INTs, while Tagovailoa has thrown for 37 TDs and four INTs, with two of those coming against Georgia. Murray has also added 928 rushing yards and 12 rushing TDs, too.
It’ll certainly be interesting to see how the Heisman voting shakes out.
