Ugonna Onyenso will undergo surgery on his injured foot, according to a report.
That’s per The Athletic’s Kyle Tucker and Shams Charania. Onyenso initially suffered the injury in a scrimmage prior to the 2023 GLOBL JAM event in Toronto last week.
Per the report, Onyenso broke his foot and is expected to miss at least 2 months as he recovers from surgery.
Coach John Calipari gave an encouraging update shortly after he suffered the injury, but it appears it’s more severe than initially hoped.
Onyenso’s injury puts Kentucky’s front court depth into question ahead of the 2023-24 season. He was expected to play a big role with the Wildcats this season as he’s one of the only true centers on the roster.
5-star freshman Aaron Bradshaw is also dealing with a foot injury and might not be ready in time to start the upcoming season.
West Virginia transfer Tre Mitchell started at the 5 en route to Kentucky’s GLOBL JAM championship in Toronto this week. Mitchell is listed at 6-foot-9, but is versatile enough to play center for the Wildcats. He led the Mountaineers in defensive rebounds last season.
It’s possible Kentucky will look to make a late transfer portal addition to help provide depth at the center position.
