Somehow, some way, we’re nearing the halfway point of the 2025 college football regular season. There’s still a lot of time for contenders to truly separate themselves atop the rankings, but so far, 3 coaches in particular have stood out to Urban Meyer. Oddly enough, all their teams start with the letter O.
Meyer revealed his top coaching performances of the season via The Triple Option show earlier this week. He believes Dan Lanning (Oregon), Ryan Day (Ohio State) and Lane Kiffin (Ole Miss) have done the best job through September.
Meyer admitted there’s a difference between “best performances” and “doing the best job.” He made his rankings with the “best job” in mind, but shouted out two other coaches — south Florida’s Alex Golesh and Illinois’ Bret Bielema — for their strong starts.
“[Performance-wise], you’d have to go [Alex] Golesh from South Florida,” Meyer told Mark Ingram and Rob Stone. “But, ‘who’s doing the best job?’ I put Dan Lanning, Ryan Day and Lane Kiffin, with Bret Bielema nipping at the toes of Lane Kiffin. [Based] on body of work in 2025.”
Ohio State (No. 1 in the AP poll), Oregon (No. 2) and Ole Miss (No. 4) are all undefeated and idle in Week 6. The Buckeyes and Ducks are using this bye to prepare for the Fighting Illini and Indiana Hoosiers, respectively, in what should be ranked-on-ranked affairs next Saturday. The Rebels, meanwhile, will welcome the Washington State Cougars to town.
