Four days after Vanderbilt’s season-opening win at Hawaii, Clark Lea and the program announced that it has dismissed freshmen Daniel Martin and Maurice Edwards.
Lea said in a statement announcing the news that a “strong ecosystem will undoubtedly strengthen our program’s performance on and off the field.”
Martin was a 4-star linebacker ranked as No. 23 linebacker in the nation by the 247Sports Composite. Edwards was rated a 3-star running back and the No. 15 player in the state of Illinois by the 247Sports Composite.
Lea then added more reaction on the SEC coaches media teleconference.
“First thing. It’s never a fun aspect or a good day when you have to make these decisions,” Lea said. “… I’m not going to go more in depth that what was said in the statement. … With respect to what it means moving forward, this program is going to be fine. We’re not defined by any one person in the program. … We have a lot of guys in the locker room that we lean upon who are going to step into roles moving forward. We’re not going to bat an eye.”
