WATCH: Controversial targeting call results in Mizzou player being ejected

Getting helmet-to-helmet hits out of the game is a worthy endeavor, but the NCAA seriously needs to fix how targeting penalties are enforced and reviewed.
Defenders are often caught in lose-lose situations, as was the case with Mizzou LB Tavon Ross on Saturday afternoon at Tennessee.
As you can see in the video below, Ross goes low on a tackle of Tennessee PR Marquez Callaway, but Callaway lowers his head, leading to Ross’s helmet making contact with Callaway’s. After review, officials upheld the ejection:

Callaway was injured on the play and has been in the medical tent. Meanwhile, Ross’s day is done.
The problem with the call is that whoever was reviewing the ejection should have realized that Ross couldn’t do anything about the hit. However, the call was upheld and now Ross is in the locker room for the rest of the day.
