All season at SDS, we’ve been recommending which games were worth tuning into every Saturday. Which games ended up as the best of the season?
10. Florida 36, Kentucky 30 (3OT), Week 3 (SDS Rating: 3 Georgia Domes) — After this game went into halftime tied 3-3, no one saw a triple-overtime thriller coming. It was decided on a missed call, but the Gators still registered one of their highlights of the year by pulling this one out over the Wildcats.
9. Mississippi State 34, No. 8 LSU 29, Week 4 (SDS Rating: 4 Georgia Domes) — Mississippi State put itself on the map with a win in Death Valley, but they barely escaped with their record intact after LSU launched a ridiculous near-comeback in the final five minutes of the game.
8. No. 24 South Carolina 38, No. 6 Georgia 35, Week 3 (SDS Rating: 5 Georgia Domes) — It feels like eons ago considering how these two teams’ seasons went, but the SEC East rivals took this one down to the wire, with the game decided on a missed field goal late.
7. Texas A&M 41, No. 5 Auburn 38, Week 11 (SDS Rating: 3 Georgia Domes) — Everyone assumed Auburn would spank a defense-less Texas A&M team, but Kyle Allen threw four first half touchdowns and the Aggies did just enough to hold off Auburn’s comeback, including recovering two fourth quarter fumbles.
6. No. 11 Ole Miss 23, No. 3 Alabama 17, Week 6 (SDS Rating: 5 Georgia Domes) — Ole Miss started off the best day in Mississippi football history by hanging on against the Crimson Tide, picking off a pass in the end zone to seal it. The game was marked by missed opportunities, but Bo Wallace and the Rebels made it a thriller.
5. No. 5 Auburn 42, South Carolina 35, Week 9 (SDS Rating: 3 Georgia Domes) — Neither team could stop the other, leading to an unexpected shootout on the Plains, and the Gamecocks and Tigers combined for more than 1,100 yards of total offense in a game that came down to a Dylan Thompson interception in the end zone in the final seconds.
4. No. 3 Auburn 35, No. 4 Ole Miss 31, Week 10 (SDS Rating: 5 Georgia Domes) — It ended in heartbreaking fashion for Ole Miss, with Laquon Treadwell breaking his leg right as he crossed the goal line for what would have been the game-winning score. This playoff elimination game lived up to the hype, though.
3. No. 5 Alabama 20, No. 16 LSU 13 (OT), Week 11 (SDS Rating: 5 Georgia Domes) — One of the SEC West’s best rivalries had everyone on the edge of their seats. LSU drove down the field to take a three-point lead with less than a minute to go, but Alabama stormed back to send it to overtime.
2. No. 24 LSU 10, No. 3 Ole Miss 7, Week 9 (SDS Rating: 4 Georgia Domes) — This was old-school SEC football at its finest. Ole Miss and LSU beat each other to a pulp in one of the hardest-hitting games in recent memory. The Rebels had a chance to win late, but LSU came up with an interception in the final seconds to cap off the upset in Death Valley, which ended with fans storming the field to celebrate.
1. No. 1 Alabama 55, No. 15 Auburn 44, Week 14 (SDS Rating: 5 Georgia Domes) — Is it possible to top the 2013 Iron Bowl? This year’s affair was just as thrilling, with an Iron Bowl record for points scored. Amari Cooper and Sammie Coates both put on ridiculous shows catching the ball and Alabama came roaring back from a double-digit deficit in the second half to hang onto its playoff spot.
