Auburn held its third preseason practice Sunday, and the quarterback battle is waging on.
It was the first day for the players in pads; so, blocking and getting off blocks was a big emphasis in practice.
Gus Malzahn spoke to the media after the “intense” workout, and he dished some info on the quarterbacks. However, he didn’t name a starter or give any timetable. Joey Gatewood and Bo Nix continue battling for the starting job.
On the quarterbacks
“They’re more comfortable than they were in the spring, but that should happen. Like I said the other day, we put quite a bit of install in just to challenge them. So, it’s been good for them. There’s nothing like getting out there 11-on-11. Seven on seven is great, but you get out there with all 11 and the different things defenses do and all that, you see how they react. You see what they’re good at. You see what they need to improve on. So, that’s been really good for us. Like I said, this practice with the pads will give us some really good information from a coaching standpoint.”
Anything that stood out about the quarterbacks Sunday?
“There were so many plays out there. Right now, it all runs together, because we’re going pretty fast, trying to get a lot of plays. There wasn’t really anything that stood out now. Maybe after I watch the film there will be some good and some things we’ll need to improve on.”
Will he have a gut on the starting QB after the first scrimmage?
“You hope so. Scrimmages are more important than practices, but like I said, it’s a deal where we’re putting them through as many situations as we can. When we know for sure the guy who gives us the best chance to go against Oregon, we’ll name him. So, it’s still kind of no timetable, but looking forward to the first scrimmage.”
