What is a catch? Controversial ruling in Notre Dame-Wisconsin game has Twitter divided

Every week, it seems there are controversial calls happening all around the college football world (usually in the SEC).
This week, in the first half of Notre Dame’s game against Wisconsin, there was a controversial ruling of catch vs. no catch.
As you can see below, a Notre Dame receiver appears to make a catch and cross the plane of the goal line, only to then have the ball ripped out by the Wisconsin defender.
Upon review, the play stood as called on the field and the Irish were awarded the only touchdown of the first half. Here’s the controversial play:
