Mississippi State is one of a handful of SEC programs with a quarterback battle during fall camp.

Penn State transfer Tommy Stevens and Keytaon Thompson are battling to become the Bulldogs next starting signal caller, and things got underway Friday afternoon from Starkville.

Moorhead was asked about his initial impressions right out of the gate.

“I think not just K.T. and Tommy, but Garret, Jalen, and even Logan had their moments today. So, it was one practice in helmets and shirts, and I saw about four or five passes.

“They all had their moments today. So, we’re just excited to see how the competition plays out.”

Thompson was seen running with the first team during practice, and Moorhead was asked whether that was an indication of Thompson leading the competition.

“No, it’s probably indicative of the drill that you saw. The way we have it set up is those guys switch essentially every period.

“So, the way we do our reps, it’s 4-3-2-3-2-1; ones, twos, and threes. So, whoever starts with the ones in the first roll, they get the twos the second roll. Essentially they’re getting an even number of reps with the ones and the twos every period and consequently through the course of practice.”

Moorhead then fielded a question regarding Stephens and already having 85 percent of the offensive verbiage down.

“Yeah, what we had run there (at Penn State) and what we continue to run now, it’s 100 percent. There are some things we did in our off-season studies, and some things that we added that no one really knew. So, that would have been not just new to him but new to everybody.

“But we changed some words of the play. The concepts he would understand. There’s some verbiage that we changed, but it was not like trying to teach it to a new freshman. It’s like a guy that’s been in the system for four years or three years.”

It appears that Stevens has a really strong handle of the offense already having played under Moorhead at Penn State.
