Ole Miss’ Grove Bowl gave fans a glimpse at the new offensive and defensive schemes that have been installed this off-season.

Rich Rodriguez takes the reigns of the offense, while Mike MacIntyre takes over the defense.

QB Matt Corral took center stage Saturday, and he looked impressive. The California native looks like the perfect fit for Rodriguez’s offense. He has a big arm and looks like he can make every throw on the field.

Following the scrimmage, Matt Luke spoke to the media. Below are the important things he said:

  • “Overall, it was a good day. I don’t think we had any major injuries. We were able to get a bunch of good situations done. I thought it was a competitive game. I saw some really good things. I saw some flashes out of some young guys, which was good. Overall, we got what we wanted, trying to keep it vanilla. We just wanted to see a competitive game and them get after it, and I thought we accomplished that.
  • “I thought they were able to pressure the QB when they got in some of their nickel fronts. Qaadir Sheppard showed up on some edges and some guys were making some plays and flying around. I thought Sam Williams showed up a couple of times in third-and-long stuff.”
  • On Matt Corral’s progress this spring: “Just the overall command. You can really tell a difference between him and the other QBs. Even today, just little things. Being there a year and having the four games under his belt from last year. You can just see his poise. I remember this time last year him being so disappointed after the spring game last year. It’s just such a big difference this year, just with his poise and his command.”
  • “I think in the spring you always want to get better. I’m glad we don’t play tomorrow. We’ve got a lot of getting better to do. There are some really good things and a lot of young guys stepping up, especially offensively. We’ve got some veteran guys on defense. It’s always hard to tell in the spring. The spring is more about players, not plays.”
