ESPN updated its Experts’ Heisman Trophy Poll Tuesday.

West Virginia QB Will Grier leads the poll with 32 total points, while Houston DT Ed Oliver is second with 31 points. In fact, there are no SEC players in the top four — Grier, Oliver, Wisconsin RB Jonathan Taylor and Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray.

Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa ranks No. 5 with 20 total points, 12 points behind the leader Grier. Missouri QB Drew Lock ranks eighth with just 3 points.

Knowing what we know, a defensive player likely won’t win the Heisman Trophy. So, while Oliver is likely the best overall player in the country, the Heisman is probably out of the question. He could still be invited to New York, however.

The Heisman has turned into more of a popularity contest than anything. The winner is usually the QB or RB on the nation’s best team. There are exceptions, of course, but the winner’s team will have to be in contention for a national championship.

That means Tagovailoa or Kyler Murray may likely have the best shot of any player on the ranking currently. Missouri would have to upset Georgia and win the SEC East for Lock to be a serious contender regardless of the video game numbers he may up.
