Why former Alabama DL A’Shawn Robinson surprisingly didn’t play in Lions’ season opener

Former Alabama second-round pick A’Shawn Robinson was surprisingly benched for the Detroit Lions’ season opener Monday night. The Lions listed Robinson as a healthy scratch prior to the game.
Robinson entered training camp as a starter for the Lions along the defensive line, but this has to be a new career low for him. New Lions head coach Matt Patricia was asked about it after the game, and he said, “It’s just one of those things.” He also added that Robinson is a hard worker.
Patricia’s coaching debut was certainly forgettable. The Jets trashed the Lions 48-17 on Monday Night Football, and the defensive line was pushed around.
Detroit selected Robinson with the No. 46 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, and he was a starter a year ago. It’ll be interesting to see if Robinson can work his way back into the defensive line rotation at some point this season.
Robinson was a standout at Alabama from 2013 to 2015. He was named a Freshman All-American in 2013 and decided to leave school after his junior season. During his first two years with the Lions, Robinson made 54 tackles, including 2.5 sacks, with one INT.
