The Panthers have fired Matt Rhule, and replaced him on an interim basis with former Missouri defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.
The team made the decision after it fell to 1-4 with a home loss to San Francisco. He leaves with an 11-27 record.
The Panthers replaced Rhule with Wilks, the defensive pass game coordinator/secondary coach Steve Wilks. The 53-year-old Wilks spent one year as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, and 6 years on the Panthers staff from 2012-17.

Wilks spent the 2021 season as defensive coordinator at Missouri. Wilks has over 25 years of coaching experience at the college and NFL level.
Wilks did not coach during the 2020 season, and previously was the defensive coordinator with the Cleveland Browns during the 2019 season. As Arizona’s head coach in 2018, the team went 3–13.
While he previously coached with the Carolina Panthers, Wilks also spent time with the San Diego Chargers and Chicago Bears. His previous college job before Missouri was with Washington back in 2005.
