It’s the first time in 16 years someone other than Joey Chestnut has won the contest at Nathan’s flagship Coney Island location. Chestnut was not part of the 2024 competition. He signed a deal with Impossible Foods to promote a meatless dog, creating a conflict with Nathan’s and Major League Eating which kept him from defending his crown in 2024.
In Chestnut’s absence, Geoffrey Esper was the betting favorite at BetMGM. Thursday morning, Esper had odds of -115. James Webb was next with +130 odds, followed by Nick Wehry at +550. Bertoletti had the fourth-best odds at BetMGM at +750.
Bertoletti bettors have something extra to celebrate this Independence Day. A $100 wager on Bertoletti at +750 would produce an $850 payout. Per BetMGM data shared Thursday morning with Saturday Down South, 8.8% of tickets (bets) were on Bertoletti for 6.7% of the handle (money bet).
Though Esper and Webb did not win the competition, there were opportunities for their backers to come away with winning tickets. Both players went “over” on their over/under totals. Esper, who had an over/under of 49.5, finished with 53 hot dogs. Webb, whose over/under was set at 47.5, downed 52 dogs.
Bertoletti, whose career in competitive eating dates back to 2007, had last competed in the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Competition in 2022, downing 33.5 that year.
