Bill Belichick is finalizing a deal to become North Carolina’s head football coach, according to a report.

Inside Carolina broke that news on Wednesday afternoon, citing multiple sources. The news comes as the university reportedly called an emergency board meeting for Wednesday to discuss contract terms for its next head coach.

Belichick’s hiring is subject to approval by North Carolina’s Board of Trustees, according to Inside Carolina.

Belichick, 72, would be the oldest active head coach in FBS. He replaced a coach in Mack Brown who previously held that title. His hiring will certainly be controversial in some circles due to his age and lack of experience at the collegiate level.

Previous reports cited that Belichick wanted his son, Stephen Belichick, to be named UNC’s coach-in-waiting as part of the deal. It’s unclear if that clause will ultimately be written into his contract. Stephen Belichick served as Washington’s defensive coordinator this season.

Bill Belichick is widely regarded as the most accomplished coach in NFL history. His 6 Super Bowl titles are the most all-time for any head coach.

Belichick does have a previous connection to North Carolina, as his father served as an assistant coach for the Tar Heels in the 1950’s.

North Carolina has not yet confirmed Belichick’s hiring.
