Brent Venables is known as one of the more energetic and personable coaches in the country, and that translates to the practice field.

Oklahoma linebacker Danny Stutsman went on the Pat McAfee Show following his 9-tackle, 1.5-TFL performance against rival Texas. The veteran linebacker, who coined the viral phrase “Oklahoma fears God, and Texas fears Oklahoma” during his pregame speech on Saturday, revealed some interesting nuggets about his head coach.

“Coach Venables, a lot of people don’t know but he’s actually our scout team QB,” Stutsman said. “So when he’s out there slinging the rock, kind of embarrassing these dudes, we have to bring it every single day.”

Stutsman went on to say that Veneables is not afraid to lower his shoulder in practice despite his lack of pads, citing that “Coach V’s a guy waking up at 5:00 a.m. to run stadiums.”

At 52 years of age, even injuries do not stop Venables from hitting the field.

“He actually hurt his meniscus and he was still at practice slinging the rock,” Stutsman said. “He doesn’t take any days off… He gets more treatment than some of the guys right now. He puts his body through a lot.”

Venables and the fifth-ranked Sooners will take on UCF on Oct. 21 following a bye this week.
