5 Biggest Takeaways: Run game sparks Ole Miss as Rebels dominate State

Here are five takeaways from Ole Miss’ 31-17 win over Mississippi State:

  • Finally, a run game: For as inept as the Ole Miss run game has been all season long, it was equally as good for 60 minutes on Saturday afternoon. Hugh Freeze established the run early with some creative play calls to spring his backs around the edge. The Rebels rushed for 205 yards against a very good Mississippi State front seven, with 148 yards coming on the legs of Jaylen Walton. Walton and Jordan Wilkins led an impressive rushing attack.
  • Wallace comes up big on Senior Day:  Coming off, perhaps, his worst performance of the year, Bo Wallace shouldered the Rebels on Saturday afternoon. The senior completed 13-of-30 passes for 296 yards, and was clearly hobbled by his ankle which he sprained two weeks ago at Arkansas. Wallace misfired early, often overthrowing open targets and seemed to be favoring his ankle, unable to push off and step into throws. However, Wallace improved as the game progressed and threw a couple lasers late in the game for big plays.
  • Still a good team: A midseason skid and a myriad of injuries dampened the start to which Ole Miss got off and the way the Rebels were playing. We saw on Saturday, though, that when motivated and prepared, Ole Miss is still a very good team  capable of beating anyone in the country. A bowl win would solidify a very good season for the Rebels.
  • Enjoy it while it lasts: It’s been a program-defining season for Freeze and this Rebels team, and while the super sophomore class will turn to juniors next season and still provide the foundation of Ole Miss football, a strong class of seniors and even a few juniors are departing and will leave quite the hole for the Rebels to replace. Following the bowl game, Freeze will have to get to work on restructuring his team as a new recruiting class comes in and the Rebels look to replace some key faces.
  • Rebels avenged 2013 loss: The loss in the 2013 Egg Bowl stung for Ole Miss and the Rebels faithful, however, Saturday’s win avenged the goal line fumble as Ole Miss controlled the game throughout. Any time the Bulldogs tried to swing the momentum back in their favor, Freeze’s team responded with an answer of its own and never felt in danger of surrendering its lead after the Rebels took a 14-10 lead midway through the third quarter.
