Chad Kelly likely won’t be the Denver Broncos’ starting quarterback this season. But he started during a scrimmage at Broncos training camp on Sunday, and the former Ole Miss standout had an impressive showing.

Kelly, who has been working with the third-string offense, threw a pair of touchdowns during the scrimmage, leading to Broncos coach Vance Joseph stating that the rookie quarterback could get reps with the second-string offense at some point during camp.

“Chad looked good, two touchdowns within five plays,” Joseph said, per Kyle Fredrickson of The Denver Post. “He looked good.”

Kelly is behind Case Keenum and Paxton Lynch on the Broncos’ depth chart. He is competing with Lynch for the No. 2 spot behind Keenum.

After starting at Ole Miss for two seasons from 2015-16, Kelly was selected by the Broncos with the final pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, becoming that year’s “Mr. Irrelevant.” However, he had offseason wrist surgery and was placed on the non-football injury list for the 2017 season.

Kelly is having a strong start to training camp, which could lead to him becoming the Broncos’ primary backup quarterback this season. That would certainly be a step in the right direction for the former Rebels standout after missing his entire first season in the NFL.
