Kermit Davis is out as Ole Miss’ basketball coach. The program announced a mutual parting of ways shortly after news broke of Davis’ firing. He’s the first SEC basketball coach to be let go in 2023.

“My family and I are extremely thankful for the opportunity to lead the Ole Miss men’s basketball program the past five years,” Davis said in a program release. “We appreciate Chancellor Boyce, Keith Carter, the staff and players for their support and work ethic on behalf of our program, and I wish Ole Miss the best going forward. Oxford is a special place to live and work.”

The Rebels are 10-18 overall and 2-13 in SEC play with 3 remaining regular-season games before the SEC tournament. Win Case will be the team’s interim head coach. Ole Miss’ next game is against LSU on Saturday night (8:30 p.m. ET, SEC Network).

In 5 seasons with Davis, Ole Miss posted a 74-79 record, going 32-55 against SEC teams. Davis’ Rebels made the NCAA Tournament in 2019, but have not been back to the Big Dance since. The 2019 team finished 20-13. Only one other Davis-coached Rebels team finished above .500. The 2021 team went 16-12, making the NIT. The 3 other squads finished with losing records.

Davis, 63, has been in coaching since 1983, getting his start as an assistant at Mississippi State, where he played from 1980-82. As a head coach, he has a career record of 477-317.
