Lane Kiffin is one of the more outspoken coaches about the state of name, image and likeness and how coaches and players deal with it. Kiffin recalled how he said at the outset of NIL and the transfer portal that it was effectively a creation of free agency similar to pro sports.

Kiffin spoke from the podium on Thursday at SEC Media Days, and said, “With NIL, you have a lot of pay for play going on, that’s what it is. Those 2 things combined, there just is not a system in place and I don’t think that there’s any other sports at any level that are like this.”

Free agency can happen every year, and Kiffin wondered if it happened in other sports, and he mentioned Tom Brady, A’ja Wilson, Lionel Messi and LeBron James, where they could operate on a month-to-month contract, or have free agency twice in a year.

“It’s just created a lot of issues, and these roster issues, I’m not complaining because we take advantage obviously, of free agency,” he said. “I don’t think that’s really good for college football.”

It’s a poor system that’s only going to get worse, he said.

Asked about potential revenue sharing, Kiffin said like many topics in this space, there are good and bad things, but said: “Revenue sharing on the surface would be great, because players getting paid is coming from the money they’re helping to make the university. But again, I try to think things through, and the other things that happen when you do something … I’m not the only one saying this, but this is a disaster coming because you legalized cheating and told donors you can play the players is what you did.”
