Lane Kiffin was asked after the game about the controversial call late in the Egg Bowl loss to Mississippi State when a play that involved an inadvertent whistle was reviewed, and the ball eventually awarded to State on a fumble recovery.
“We’ve already discussed the whistle dead,” Kiffin said. “As you heard him say, which he probably shouldn’t have said, there was an inadvertent whistle so needed to replay the down. So he’s admitting that there was an inadvertent whistle. So everyone stops, including myself. Knox, in your 5th grade football, when the whistle blows, you’re supposed to do what? Stop. So all of a sudden we’re supposed to coach different. So obviously I was very frustrated with that situation. And hoping right away it’s a lateral, I can see that, but everyone stopped because you blew a whistle that you already said you did. So no reasonable explanation at all except ‘Well, their 44 didn’t stop.’ OK, so what does that mean. One guy didn’t stop, maybe he didn’t hear it and everybody else did. I don’t know what to do about it.”
