Lane Kiffin shared his reaction to DJ Durkin’s departure from Texas A&M on Tuesday afternoon.

Durkin has reportedly been hired by Auburn to be its next defensive coordinator under Hugh Freeze. Prior to serving in that role for the Aggies, Durkin coached under Kiffin at Ole Miss from 2020-21.

Kiffin, always one to have fun on social media, took a jab at Durkin and Auburn upon seeing the news:

Ole Miss has won its last 2 meetings against Auburn. It’s the Rebels’ first multi-game winning streak over the Tigers since they won 3 in a row from 1949-52.

Durkin spent 2 years on Kiffin’s staff in Oxford as co-defensive coordinator. Ole Miss was the first college program to hire Durkin after he was fired by Maryland following an investigation into the program’s “toxic” culture during his tenure as head coach.

Kiffin famously took a jab at Texas A&M after it hired Durkin away from the Rebels following the 2021 season.

“D.J. really turned around our defense here and played really good, especially the second half of last year,” Kiffin said in October of 2022 before Ole Miss faced Texas A&M. “We tried to keep him because he did a great job … Got outbid. Kind of a common theme with that program. He’s doing a really good job there. They’re very multiple and doing a lot of good things.”

Because of SEC expansion and a new scheduling format, Auburn and Ole Miss will not play each other in 2024. However, Kiffin and Durkin are likely to cross paths on the recruiting trail over the coming months.
