This past Sunday marked the one year anniversary of Aaron Rodgers, quarterback of the Green Bay Packers, telling his fans to relax.

Green Bay, a normally dominant team, had dropped two of its first three games and people were getting very concerned. The star quarterback’s advice? “R-E-L-A-X. Relax.”

Ole Miss could do well to also follow that advice. This “relax” doesn’t apply physically, as in players should not be taking two days off practice this week to catch up on their sleep. This “relax” needs to happen mentally, where it is most challenging to relax after a defeat.

One would think that Ole Miss had its arms and legs torn off against Florida, the way the post-game media frenzy erupted. But the Rebels, which stepped into the Swamp last Saturday, are the same ones who are practicing today, players like Chad Kelly, Laquon Treadwell, Evan Engram, Quincy Adeboyejo and Jordan Wilkins. These players and more are still here, which means nothing has changed around Ole Miss’ incredible pool of talent. Nothing has changed with their potential, either.

The team as a whole has undoubtedly changed. A team always changes after its first loss. But for Ole Miss in particular, this loss is frightening because it’s happened before. Last year, the Rebels were also ranked No. 3 and cruising at 7-0 when they lost to LSU. They proceeded to drop three more games. In 2013, Ole Miss wasn’t as highly-ranked, but after a loss to Alabama in Week 4, the Rebels also proceeded to drop two.

So here is where Ole Miss needs to relax again. It’s very easy to feed into the “here we go again” and the “same old, same old.” But time can’t be wasted getting caught up in that. Florida was just one game. It was unfortunate, it was painful, but it will not define the season. Ole Miss has the power to make that happen by clearing its mind of history, reviewing the Florida game play progressively, and getting back to basics against New Mexico State.

The Aggies of New Mexico State are winless this season, which means the Rebels can take the time to re-establish confidence in the basics that were out of sync against Florida — snapping and protecting the football among them. Kelly, who was hurried, harried, and intercepted against Florida, can regain his sense of control. The Ole Miss running backs will be able to stretch their legs, and the offensive line can continue its development with an eye to detail.

Ole Miss doesn’t have to hang 70-plus points on New Mexico State to prove it has recovered, although many fans might feel like the Rebels should. Ole Miss just has to show it’s a team that has learned from the loss, perfected the basics and believes that 2015 is its own season. To get to that mindset this Saturday, the Rebels first have to relax.

You’ve got a lot of season ahead of you.
