Trick plays always change momentum. When they are successful, the defense is put on its back heels and wondering how they got kicked. When they fail, the offense is usually off the field and all the work done to prepare for that one opportunity is wasted.

And then sometimes the trick play can absolutely gut the opponent. Like it did Friday night when Ole Miss trounced Oklahoma State.

The Rebels’ trick play came with five second before the half. Not only did Hugh Freeze opt not to go for the field goal, he decided to run a play for his offensive tackle to catch a touchdown:

And on a screen pass, no less!

The play changed the game right before halftime and Ole Miss players could sense it. Many told the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal the play broke the Cowboys’ will in the game.

“That took the wind out of their sails,” offensive tackle Fahn Cooper said. “It was one thing to score right before the half. It was another thing for Laremy Tunsil to score.”

Yes, seeing an offensive lineman score like that can be very jarring. Especially when it is the first time that player has scored at any level of football. And the score almost ended the game before halftime, making it 34-6 head into the second half.
