Sports director Jon Sokoloff reported earlier this week that Lane Kiffin was expected to step down from his position at Ole Miss on Friday to take the Auburn head coaching job.

That has not proven to be true, as Kiffin now reportedly has a new mega-deal in place to remain at Ole Miss.

Kiffin has also publicly sparred with Sokoloff every step of the way during the process, insisting he was staying in Oxford.

On Saturday afternoon, Sokoloff took to Twitter to try to explain how the situation unfolded with the information he was receiving:

“It appears congratulations are in order for Lane Kiffin who has chosen to stay at Ole Miss and not take the Auburn job,” Sokoloff’s note begins. “Our original reporting had Kiffin headed to Auburn. At the time of that report, multiple sources, independent of each other confirmed. Ole Miss denied the report and we published that. This has changed often. Our reports have included each update and also Coach Kiffin’s public frustration with sources reports.

“It is the job to report based on solid information. That information can and does change and we have reported that as well. All the best to Lane in this next year.”

We’ll see if Kiffin has anything to say about this latest report from Sokoloff.
