I don’t know if FSU is truly back. But I do know Clemson is long, long gone.

It was a good ride, Dabo. Thanks for the memories.

Speaking of memories … remember when Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss were about to take over the SEC West? Or 3-0 Colorado? Or when Bo Nix was supposed to win a Heisman and natty as Auburn’s quarterback? Not Oregon’s!

Good times.

Those are among the 10 things I’m absolutely overreacting to after a narrative-changing Week 4 in and mostly around the SEC.

10. Jalen Milroe is who I thought he was … Alabama’s QB1

So, yes, the greatest coach in college football history all but admitted he overreacted last week by benching Jalen Milroe.

Saturday, Nick Saban went back to Milroe, and Milroe went back to work.

At one point, Milroe was 10-for-12, but all anybody was talking about was his horrendous interception in the end zone that killed a Bama scoring threat. He finished 17-for-21 for 225 yards, including a perfect 33-yard rainbow TD to Jalen Hale that he didn’t see because he got drilled as soon as he released it.

Milroe is never going to look like Tua, a’ight? Maybe not even like freshman Jalen Hurts.

But he’s by far, not even close, quit asking, a’ight, light years better than Alabama’s other 2 options. Milroe is the reason Alabama beat trendy upset pick Ole Miss on Saturday. He’s the reason Alabama still has a chance to win the most mediocre SEC West since 2007.

Does he make Alabama an SEC title threat or potential Playoff team?

No. But neither did Bryce Young.

Alabama is what it is — 5 first-rounders shy of Saban’s dynasty teams. But they’re far less than that if anybody other than Milroe is taking snaps.

9. Garrett Riley killed Clemson …

It never comes down to 1 play.

But, good grief, sometimes 1 play is all you remember. It becomes the play that hangs over a season and prompts a million what-ifs.

And if there’s 1 play that sums up the curious state of Clemson’s offense after 4 games under wunderkind Garrett Riley, it was his, ahem, strange play-call on 3rd-and-1, down 7, in overtime Saturday against FSU.

Keep in mind, after Cade Klubnik misfired on 1st down, Will Shipley bailed out the Tigers with a physical 9-yard run to set up the 3rd-and-1.

Instead of putting the ball back in the belly of your best player and moving the chains, Riley went razzle dazzle.

Sizzle? Fizzle.

Predictably, Klubnik then misfired on the ensuing 4th-down throw and, just like that, everything ended.

Clemson’s 7-game winning streak vs. FSU.

Clemson’s 2023 Playoff hopes.

Clemson’s stranglehold on the ACC.

Pizza parties to pity parties. Say it ain’t so, Dabo.

8. The big winner Saturday? The Gator Bowl

Why? They’re about to get Alabama-Clemson, Round V.

Get your tickets now!

7. Why, Notre Dame, why?

Speaking of 1 play, this one will haunt the ghosts of Notre Dame.

Trying to protect a 4-point lead in the final 15 seconds, on 3rd-and-Playoff dreams to go, Notre Dame decided to play it safe.

And it cost the Irish everything.

Instead of sending the house after Ohio State QB Kyle McCord, the Irish dropped 8 into coverage.

It looked like a spring game rep, and McCord promptly delivered a 21-yard strike to Emeka Egbuka to set up a 1st down at the Irish 1-yard line with 7 seconds left.

Ohio State threw 2 quick incompletions, then surprised everybody by running for a 1-yard TD on the final play to escape with a 17-14 victory.

Forget the final play.

Notre Dame lost the game — and its chance to legitimize its 4-0 start — by playing soft on their most important play in, oh, their past decade.

Let’s be honest: Nobody has taken Notre Dame seriously as a national championship threat since Alabama blasted an unbeaten Irish squad in the 2012 BCS title game.

Saturday was their opportunity. The Irish were more physical than Ohio State. They stonewalled Ohio State. They drove 96 yards to take the lead late in the 4th quarter.

They forced the Buckeyes into 3rd-and-19 … and with everything on the line, played it safe.

Unbelievable.

The Irish got exactly what they deserved.

6. Oh, Auburn

Texas A&M proved Saturday it has 2 quality quarterbacks.

Auburn proved Saturday it still doesn’t have 1.

Payton Thorne threw for 44 yards. Teammates added 12 more. The Tigers’ 56-yard output was their worst since totaling 60 yards in a 13-7 loss at Georgia in 2016.

As bad as all of that is, it’s even worse when Tigers fans flipped the channel and saw Bo Nix go 28-for-33 for 276 yards and 3 more TD passes as Oregon crushed Colorado.

Nix is on his way to New York for the Heisman ceremony, and his team is firmly in the Playoff hunt.

Auburn still is searching for a QB to be as good as even “Bad Bo” was on occasion.

Maybe Hugh Freeze should go back to calling plays?

5. 5 notable numbers from Week 4

487: Passing yards from Mississippi State QB Will Rogers. Last year, setting a career-high in any passing category wouldn’t have been terribly notable. This year? It damn-near equaled his season total through 3 games. Last week, I blasted MSU for completely abandoning Rogers and the passing game. Saturday, Rogers completed 30-of-48 for a season-high 487 yards and 3 TDs. Now, about that defense …

432 yards, 3 TDs: JT Daniels’ passing stats against USF — you know, the defense that forced Alabama QBs into a 10-for-23, 107-yard disaster last week. Daniels, of course, is a former starter at Georgia. Unfortunately for Rice, Daniels left the game with an injury in the 3rd quarter, so at least some things don’t change.

11: How many times Max Johnson has thrown at least 2 TD passes in a game. Johnson came off the bench Saturday to replace injured starter Conner Weigman and his 2 TD tosses helped Texas A&M pull away from Auburn.

2: Pick-6s from Kentucky DB Maxwell Hairston in the Wildcats’ 45-28 win over Vandy. Hairston’s INT returns totaled 83 yards — or 35 more than any Vandy receiver.

6: Ricky Pearsall’s reception total Saturday in Florida’s uninspiring 22-7 victory over Charlotte.

Yes, I know other receivers had bigger numbers. Much bigger numbers. But did they do this?

4. The 4 Playoff teams are …

1. Washington, 2. FSU, 3. Texas, 4. Oregon

I toyed with putting 3 Pac-12 teams in this week’s Final Four, but that seemed a tad aggressive. Oregon is legitimate, and USC would win a shootout against most teams in the top 10. Slot the B1G teams at 5, 6, 7 — order TBD — even though I have questions about OSU QB Kyle McCord.

On a day that featured 6 Top-25 battles and several other heavyweight conference clashes, a special shoutout to undefeated Georgia for its gutsy 49-21 victory over Alabama … Birmingham.

Was that Kirby Smart’s first victory over a Super Bowl champion QB?

3. A real bonus baby …

Iowa’s offense has stunk just about every minute of Brian Ferentz’s tenure as OC.

Most teams would have fired him after last season, when the Hawkeyes averaged just 17.7 points per game, nearly a touchdown off their pedestrian 2021 pace.

Check that: Most teams wouldn’t have promoted him into the spot.

But Father knows best, so Brian returned in 2023 with a very specific addendum to his contract: Score 325 points this season … or else.

Obviously, the Internet was going to have fun tracking his efforts.

Obviously, Brian has to respond, right?

For the record, Brian didn’t say that, a’ight? Kanell is correct (which might be the only time I’ve written that). It’s fake. But it was too funny to ignore.

Also, I was going to update the point total graphic after Saturday night’s game against Penn State, but there’s no need.

The Nittany Lions shut out Ferentz’s low-flying Hawkeyes offense.

2. KJ Jefferson deserves better

Jefferson reminds me of Josh Dobbs in that most SEC fans don’t truly respect how good he is.

And won’t, until he’s gone.

It took Tennessee fans a couple of years and some really bad quarterback play after Dobbs to begrudgingly come around on him.

At least Arkansas fans are more appreciative in the moment. And why not? Jefferson almost single-handedly took down LSU on Saturday night at Death Valley.

They know where Arkansas would be without him.

Every time I watch Jefferson put on the cape, I wonder: Can you imagine where Alabama or Clemson or, heck, even Ohio State, might be with him?

1. ‘The Cinderella story is over, man’

Coach Prime brings out the best in everybody.

Even the opponent.

The fact that a top-10 football team, playing at home and favored by 21, could get this jacked up about playing a team that won 1 game last year tells you everything you need to know about Coach Prime’s impact on the 2023 season.

Of course, Twitter couldn’t wait to poke fun at the irony of Dan Lanning’s holier-than-thou attitude.

Hey, win some, lose some. Right, Dan?

Keep playing like this and you might get another shot at Georgia’s defense.

You remember how that went last year, right?
