really starting to wonder if there are any other schools in the SEC?
I understand why Alabama
Sorry, accidentally hit the send button while typing. What I was trying to say was I understand why Alabama gets all these awards and don’t get me wrong, all of them are deserving. But why can’t a Mason or Stoops be coach of the year or maybe a Snell or Bentley be Freshman of the year. Might as well just rename this the Alabama awards.
Well, I would not go that far ! But, there could be some awards based on progress or compared to expectations. Some coaches and teams did much better than expected and much better than last year – which should be applauded, and maybe awarded.
Coach of the year…for going 6-6? I don’t think so.
Your argument that some part-timer (that didn’t accomplish much to begin with) should be freshman of the year over the guy that drives the best team in football is even more ludicrous.
This isn’t team awards it’s individual awards.
Dude, you sound awfully arrogant. Part timer? Didn’t accomplish a lot? He rushed for 1,052 yards and 13 touchdowns while being that part timer. He was rated the 4th best freshman in the country by pro football focus. He most certainly has a case. Don’t be so arrogant to think that jalen hurts was the only freshman to perform at a high level. Plus, Alabama isn’t a dominant team because of hurts. They’re a dominant team because they have one of the best defenses of all time. No matter who was at quarterback, Alabama would probably have gone undefeated. I can confidently tell you that if it weren’t for benny snell, Kentucky likely wouldn’t be going to a bowl game. Nothing about that argument is ludicrous. Try taking your crimson goggles off from time to time.
Uh Darviathar, we went 7-5…
Catsfan, MU’s true frosh RB had more yards and a averaged a yard more per carry as a part timer and still belongs nowhere near this award. It does bode well for both of our teams futures though.
I think Muschamp should have been coach of the year. To take a 3-9 SC team that was expected to finish last in the east and overall last in the SEC. And he brings in a whole new staff with the exception of Shawn Elliott and according to all services was completely lacking any talent left from the previous coaching staff and to get them to 6-6 and be bowl eligible. I think is a heck of a job.
SEC coach of the year should’ve been Mark Stoops. Or Coach O from LSU
Stoops finished right where he was expected too. Coach O didn’t coach the whole year and LSU was expected to be competitive and they were. Muschamp, took a team that wasn’t suppose to do anything and made them bowl eligible. Most people Had SC with no more than 2 wins this year. And for Saban to be Coach of the year, I could have coached that team to 13 wins.
Hitman, In some ways yes, UK’s results were where we expected to finish. Yet we started 0-2, the bottom fell out of this team, we lost our starting quarterback, and then finished the season 7-3 with a massive upset over Louisville. The argument can easily be made for Stoops as COTY. Muschamp also did a great job with that team, with their highlight win over Tennessee.
SC was only suppose to beat Western Carolina, and UMASS, and the East Carolina game was a game that the national pundits was saying was a toss up but most were picking EC but SC won that one. They were also suppose to lose to Vanderbilt and Missouri and Tennessee and they won all 3 of those games. So to me just based on the fact that they were definitely not suppose to even thinking about going bowling and they are going. To me means Muschamp pulled off a miracle to even get them to bowl eligibility and to overall finish in front of Miss St, Ole, Miss, Vandy and Missouri he deserves to be in that coach of the year conversation, but as long as Saban keeps running the table on the conference then he will likely win it every year. I can understand your Stoops point, but to me if you finish where you were suppose to, then he was just doing the job he was suppose to be doing much like Saban.
While Cam Robinson was still decent this year, i’m not sure i agree with him getting the Jacobs Trophy
That shows that they favored players and coaches from the big name programs. A lot of people didn’t get the recognition they deserve.
They don’t favor people from big name programs, he just graded out as the best lineman. For other positions it is a judgement call, but for linemen it is their grade that determines who gets it. Their grade is a combination of dozens of factors including competition and performance. Cam Robinson not only graded out as the best in the SEC, but one of the best in the nation. Unless you are saying they should have awarded it to a lesser player because they play at a smaller school, you are off base.
Sorry I’ve been really frustrated that some deserving Kentucky players haven’t gotten recognized these last couple of days. Boom Williams and benny snell both put up similar numbers to the first and second team backs and they did it while splitting carries. Neither one got recognized. Also, mike Edwards deserved at least a second team honor at safety. I’m sorry but he had a better season than Eddie Jackson by the numbers. And he actually played in all 12 games. Anyway, because of these slights I again got frustrated when I saw another Alabama player get an award. I don’t know if he’s deserving or not. If you say there’s a grading system, I’ll take your word for it. But I do remember hearing people talk about cam Robinson having a rough year. But once again, I’m not one to say whether he did or didn’t.
I mean we all know how big of a name Arkansas and Ole Miss are… even Auburn for that matter. They are no Vanderbilt, but they aren’t an Alabama, USC, or Ohio State either.
Huh? Not sure what your point is.
So you retired as a Cpl?
Not to sound bias but Saban lost a starting QB, Heisman trophy winning running back, Kenyan drake, Starting center, starting right guard, and countless players from the defense that included Reggie ragland, jaran reed, ashawn robinson, cyrus jones, denzell devall, and geno smith. He replaced all the key spots with a duel threat freshman QB, a running game by commitee that has recently turned into a 3 headed monster with harris scarbrough and jacobs. next he has fielded prolly the greatest defense he has ever had, any prolly in the past couple decades of the sport…. And went 13 – 0
Sounds like coach of the year to me
That’s college football. Every coach loses players every year. Every coach had deal with losing players like saban did. Except other coaches don’t have the luxury of replacing those players with more 5 star players. You could argue that he actually upgraded in a lot of those positions. That being said, I do think he should be coach of the year. But don’t act like he overcame incredible adversity to field the best team in the country. He has the best players in the country and honestly he’s been such a great coach for so long that the hard part is already done. He’s created an established winning culture there and built a machine. Now he just needs to make sure he keeps that machine oiled up and running properly. Props to him.
Every program has turnover. But, I would argue that it takes a great (not just good) coach to, with the staff he built, coach a team to an undefeated season while replacing the talent that they lost from last year. Plenty on defense, yes; really to me the biggest turnover on defense was coaching, with changing the DC, DB coach, and DL coach. And since Pruitt coaches ILBs, you changed 3/4 of the defensive position coaches all at once.
But honestly look at the offense in particular: 1st-round (!) center, 5th-year senior QB, and ALL of the experienced RBs, including a Heisman winner with 2200+ yds for the year and one of the best return men and versatile RBs that Bama has ever had. Also, our O-line essentially had Cam and Ross left, and now has a true freshman RT, and also had coaching turnover. Honestly, the only parts of the offense that *weren’t* rebuilt were the TEs and WRs, and even in the WRs we only had Ridley and Stewart as proven starters and the TEs ALSO had coaching turnover.
Combine all that with the fact that I think it’s actually a lot harder to go from a national championship to on the brink of another one compared to going 6-6 after a 3-9 year; you have to manage complacency for some guys, and manage dealing with expectations for others.
I think Muschamp, Stoops, and Mason had great years, and if it weren’t for what Nick has done this year I’d be arguing for one of them (probably Mason). But, I thought Nick’s best coaching job was last season… until now. Now he’s on the cusp of completing his best-coached season yet. And when you’re the best coach having your best coaching season, I don’t see how you don’t deserve CotY all over the place.
