The SEC continues to be the best conference in college football. Top to bottom, the conference is as deep as any. The SEC placed three teams in the top 10 in the preseason USA Today Coaches Poll, more than any other conference.

Those three teams — No. 1 Alabama, No. 6 LSU and No. 10 Tennessee — have to be considered among the teams that could win the SEC championship this season. But don’t count out two other teams that could conceivably claim the conference title.

Here are five teams (and their odds provided by Bovada to win the SEC) that have a legitimate shot at winning in Atlanta in December and being the last team standing in what should once again prove to be the best collection of teams in any conference in America.

1. LSU (+375) – This would be truly remarkable if the Tigers can indeed get over the hump and take the crown, given the status of head coach Les Miles at the end of last season. A victory over Texas A&M, following three consecutive losses, apparently saved Miles’ job. The Tigers went on to win their bowl game and create some momentum, coach still in tow, heading into the 2016 season. Yes, there are huge question marks that must be answered before a league championship — their first since 2011 — can be secured. Has Brandon Harris matured enough as a quarterback to lead the Tigers to the top of the SEC? How will the Tigers’ defense respond to Dave Aranda, their third defensive coordinator in three seasons, and his 3-4 defense? The Tigers have big questions, but they also have big talent, and that begins with Heisman Trophy candidate RB Leonard Fournette.

2. Alabama (+175) – The “experts” have installed the Tide as the frontrunner not only in the SEC, but in the nation as well. Once again, the biggest question mark remains at quarterback. But entering a season without an established leader under center didn’t prevent the Tide from winning the 2015 national championship, so why should that be a problem entering this season? Well, sure, lightning can strike twice, but odds are it won’t. Then again, if anyone can make it happen, it’s Nick Saban and Lane Kiffin. But running back is also a question mark heading into the new season, and that may prove to be too much to overcome, even for that extraordinary coaching duo.

3. Tennessee (+400) – Yes, we’ve heard it all before. And until they prove it, the Vols will continue to be the dark horse, the “trendy” pick. But with talent like Joshua Dobbs at quarterback and Jalen Hurd at running back, there’s no reason why the Vols can’t climb to the top of the SEC East, and in turn, have the opportunity to take home all the marbles in Atlanta. The SEC East is in transition with new coaches at Georgia, South Carolina and Missouri. Nobody believes in Kentucky or Vanderbilt as legitimate contenders, so that leaves Florida as the team the Vols must leapfrog to the top of the standings.

4. Florida (+1200) – As we just pointed out, the SEC East is in a transition period, and the door is wide open for the Gators to waltz through it and earn a ticket to Atlanta with a potential SEC title on the line. But the Gators have had offseason problems of their own and must shore up the quarterback position if they hope to earn a spot in that dance. Is Luke Del Rio the answer? Only time and head coach Jim McElwain will tell. Or has the Head Ball Coach already told? A more experienced offensive line will help, and so would the reinstatement of a couple of receivers. The defense remains very talented. Is it enough to win a division that looks like it will suffer some growing pains in 2016?

5. Ole Miss (+1000) – The Rebels have been creeping up on the SEC West title for the last couple of seasons. Consecutive wins over Alabama kept hope alive in each, but could the window be closing on head coach Hugh Freeze to get his Rebels to Atlanta? Will off-the-field distractions take their toll on the Rebels’ steady rise? The answers will reveal whether Ole Miss continues to knock on the door of an SEC West title. Though Vols fans have an argument to make, the Rebels have the best quarterback in the conference in Chad Kelly. However, the Rebels must solidify the left tackle position to keep him upright. If they can, Kelly will do damage on opposing defenses. Will it be enough to finally put the Rebels over the top and give them their first trip to Atlanta?
