It didn’t take long for Steve Spurrier to be… Steve Spurrier.

Hours after officially re-joining the University of Florida’s athletic department as an ambassador and consultant, Spurrier was asked about the Gators’ current quarterback situation via teleconference and it looks like he just spilled the beans.

“(Luke) Del Rio seems to be the starter,” Spurrier said. “He is the starter now. We’ll see how it all works out.”

Florida coach Jim McElwain had stated that Del Rio was the front-runner to win the position following spring practice, but had not officially named him the starter to this point. Del Rio’s main competition has been Purdue transfer Austin Appleby, though it has been widely assumed that it was Del Rio’s job to lose once fall practice begins next week.

The Gators haven’t had much to cheer for when it comes to gunslingers since Tim Tebow left campus several years ago, but Spurrier is confident that things will change with the group they have now.

“I know that coach Mac is fired up about the ones he has here now. Coach (Doug Nussmeier) is also. So let’s give these guys a chance to play, and hopefully one of them will emerge as a top-flight player that everybody can get behind.”
