Ah, summer. A time for countdowns, big dreams throughout the country and opportunities to gobble up preseason rankings before things turn serious in the fall.

Athlon Sports released its rankings Wednesday, and to little surprise, there’s major SEC flavor in the top 10. Alabama lands at No. 1, followed by Tennessee at No. 7, LSU at No. 9 and Ole Miss at No. 10. Georgia (No. 16) and Florida (No. 20) round out the SEC teams in the top 25.

Arkansas (No. 26), Texas A&M (No. 28), Auburn (No. 35), Mississippi State (No. 41), Kentucky (No. 56), Vanderbilt (No. 57) and Missouri (No. 62)  fell outside the top 25.

Here’s how Athlon Sports describes Alabama’s situation:

“The Crimson Tide suffered key losses on both sides of the ball, but this team reloads as well as any in the nation. Expect Nick Saban’s team to lean on its defense and ground attack until the offense finds stability at quarterback.”

If you have some time, check out the entire list. All 128 teams are ranked — North Texas brings up the rear — and there’s plenty of room for debate throughout.

After all, we need something to do to pass the hours until the best time of the year.
